In Year 1 and 2 we follow a creative curriculum where we base our learning around an exciting and engaging half-termly topic.
A typical school day will follow the timings below:
9.10- 10.10: English. Daily activities related to a high quality texts such as drama, word and sentence level writing tasks, text level tasks e.g. writing a story or a piece of information writing.
10.10- 10.25: Playtime
10.25- 11.15: Maths. Daily activities including mental and oral starters, whole class activities, independent work and lots of problem solving!
11.15- 11.55: Reading. Children are taught reading in groups twice a week (across the phase group). As well as decoding skills, children are taught to interpret and understand the text. Each half-term a different engaging text is used. On the other three sessions each week children have additional handwriting sessions, phonics, assembly and SEAL. SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) involves lots of circle time games, stories and discussions about friendships, behaviour and other issues.
12- 1: Lunch
1-1.30 Phonics. Daily fast-paced, fun activities to support children in learning their sounds and learn their key word spellings. We follow the 'Letters and Sounds' program in Year 1.
1.30 -2.15: Topic or PE. We have 3 topic sessions per week including art, history, geography, science and structured choice activities. We have PE twice a week for an hour and cover multi skills, gymnastics, dance and games.
2.15- 2.30: Playtime
2.30- 3: Topic or PE
3-3.30: Quiet reading/assembly. We have whole school assemblies with Mrs MacDonald and for singing as well as a golden assembly to celebrate hard work and good behaviour. We also have the opportunity to read quietly and change our reading books.
