PE

One of our principles at Greythorn is ‘healthy body, healthy mind.’  We aim to help the children to understand this through our PE curriculum which provides all children with high quality sports provision and an understanding of how they can implement sports into their lives. All children at Greythorn have the opportunity to become ‘sports people’ through the wide variety of sports we offer both in lessons and in sports clubs. In Foundation and Year 1/2 the children focus on developing key gross motor skills that are the building blocks for them to use for the rest of their lives. As they move through the school, all children get to experience sports such as tennis, hockey, athletics and gymnastics meaning there is something available for every child to enjoy. The children receive 2 hours a week of high-quality teaching from both the class teachers and our highly skilled sports coaches meaning a culture of being active is developed as soon as the children start school and is continued throughout. All children in Key Stage 2 are also provided with swimming lessons to ensure they have this vital life skill.

Our vision of children understanding how to develop a ‘healthy body and healthy mind’ is not just focussed on the physical benefits of exercise, but also on how exercise can be beneficial for the mind and can develop key skills such as teamwork, resilience and inclusion. This is seen in many of our team games and also during our afterschool clubs. At Greythorn, we pride ourselves on the variety of sports clubs and wide range of opportunities we offer to our children, including boccia festivals, archery after school clubs and dance workshops. Every child has the opportunity to take part in a sport they enjoy and many are offered experiences they may not have been able to otherwise access. Each child is shown the joy of sport and encouraged to pursue what they enjoy.
