Phonics
Phonics is a way of teaching children to read and spell through understanding the relationship between the different sounds in the English language (phonemes) and the letters or groups of letters that represent those sounds (graphemes). At Greythorn, we use the Letters and Sounds programme to teach daily 20-25 minute phonics sessions. In each lesson we review sounds we've learnt previously, learn new sounds and spelling patterns and practise reading and writing words and sentences.
Reading
'The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go.' Dr Seuss
At Greythorn, we have daily 20-30 minute reading sessions. We focus on understanding vocabulary, sounding out and blending to read unknown words, reading tricky words and discussing the meaning of the text.
As your child becomes a fluent and confident reader we will focus on comprehension skills such as retrieval, understanding of vocabulary, prediction, sequencing and inference. We use our reading dogs to help us- Rex Retriever, Vocabulary Victor, Predicting Pip, Sequencing Suki and Inference Iggy!
