Mathematics

At Greythorn, we believe that all children should have the opportunity to succeed and achieve in Maths. During their time in school, children will have a wide and purposeful experience of the subject and develop themselves as confident mathematicians.

What does a Greythorn Mathematician look like?

A Greythorn mathematician will have:

  • A clear understanding of the main concepts and an ability to make connections within them
  • A broad range of skills in using and applying maths
  • Fluent knowledge and recall of number facts and the number system
  • The ability to show initiative in solving problems in a wide range of contexts
  • The ability to think independently and to show resilience when faced with challenges, showing a confidence for success
  • The ability to embrace the value of learning from mistakes and false starts
  • The ability to reason, generalise and make sense of solutions
  • Fluency in performing written and mental calculations and mathematical techniques
  • A wide range of mathematical vocabulary
  • The mathematical skills they will need in their everyday lives
  • A positive attitude and enjoyment of the subject!

The National Curriculum sets out three main aims for mathematics: fluency, problem-solving and reasoning. Children are taught maths daily and are given opportunities to reason and problem solve in every lesson. We follow the mastery approach in planning and teaching and use the White Rose Schemes of Learning to support this. White Rose breaks down the learning into sequential steps and encourages children to apply their fluency to different contexts. Key fluency skills, such as counting and times-tables, are practised throughout the day. Maths is also applied meaningfully in other curriculum subjects.
