Make every day count

Year 1/2

Welcome to the KS1 class page.

In Y1 and Y2 we follow the National Curriculum where we base our learning around an exciting and engaging termly enquiry question.

A typical day in Key Stage 1 would include English, handwriting, phonics, maths and in the afternoon we cover the wider curriculum subjects such as Science, RE, History, Geography, DT, Computing, Music and Art. Throughout the week we have 2 PE sessions and cover multi skills, gymnastics, dance and games. We also deliver class Learning for Life sessions as well as whole class assemblies.

English: In English, we cover a variety of genres such as poetry, narrative and information texts. We use high-quality texts to inspire and model the different language features. Throughout the unit, we look at the key features, followed by practising of the features and then apply these to build up to their own final independent piece of writing.

Phonics: We use the Read, Write Inc Scheme of work to deliver high quality phonics sessions. Our daily phonics lessons are 30 minutes long and children are grouped according to their phonetic level. They are assessed regularly to ensure they are making progress. All children receive a fully decodable reading book to consolidate the sounds that they have been taught at home.

Maths: In Maths, we follow the White Rose scheme of work. Our daily maths sessions involve opportunities to reason, problem solve and practise basic fluency/arithmetic skills. Maths is taught across the phase group to ensure that all children can achieve and succeed at their level.

Enquiry: Enquiry is taught through an engaging enquiry question where children are encouraged to develop their own opinions, knowledge and understanding. Each termly enquiry question is driven by one of the wider curriculum areas e.g. Is an accident ever truly blameless? is driven by History. We strive to ensure there is a clear progression of knowledge and skills throughout all curriculum subjects. To launch our enquiry question we start with a ‘hook’ to excite and motivate the children and we work towards an authentic outcome.

At home, you can support your child by reading with them daily, practising their weekly spellings and weekly number facts.

Our teachers are: Ms O’Grady, Mrs Mounser, Mrs Fleming and Miss Mason.
